A striking difference December 6, 2008
I just spent a week in Belgium and it is striking how different it is from my life in Berlin. The most cultural thing I did this week was a party with my collegues. For the rest, the commute to Leuven and the office life take up all the time.
In Berlin, I have the luxury of working from home. Perhaps, I am slightly more productive in the office, but my personal life just stops in Belgium. This does not mean that I do not have fun! Actually, being around people with the same interest, the same kind of problems/joys is very motivating. I think there is a very good atmosphere, which makes it totally worth it to go to Belgium.
E. and I buy the Tip Berlin every two weeks to see what is going on. It happens so often that we just cannot choose from the many things that are happening. And this is for me a striking difference from Belgium. I know that many Belgians do not per se stay home in the evening, watching television, but in my experience, the outdoor activity is usually “going out for a drink with friends”. Nothing wrong with this very social activity, as I actually miss the good-humoured “toog hangen” and the special bar-atmosphere in Belgium.
